Cosmo was born here in the Rogue Valley in 1999. His owner was training with a professional trainer who used questionable methods that exacerbated problems in his hocks and resulted in Cosmo becoming unsound. He was only six years old at the time. His owner considered euthanasia because, as she stated, “He had no quality to his life.”

For months after he was surrendered to the Equamore Foundation in July 2005, Cosmo clearly had no interest in engaging with humans. He would refuse even to enter the barn or arena when led by staff for fear of what he might be required to endure. After months of consistently kind treatment, he began slowly to trust his human caregivers. He is now living a full and wonderful life in a small herd (see cover photo) of other retired horses where he is the “top dog.” He is especially fond of two mares in the herd, Gael and April. Also sharing Cosmo’s herd life are two other mares, Toiy and Hazel, plus another gelding named Gizmo. Cosmo is in “horse heaven” right here on earth.
