Hoof Update

December 28, 2012 Three of our horses had shoes put on their front feet today.  Two of these horses, Shorty and Bryant, have been diagnosed with disease of their Navicular bones in both front feet.  Shorty has very small feet for his size which dramatically contributes to his disease and he also has very tender soles.  Bryant was fitted with special shoes with a rubber wedge made to lift his heels.  The difference was immediate and stunning.  After a few…

Thor's Horseshoes

Shoes

December 28, 2012 Yesterday, I was galloping in the arena with the guys and I ran right out of my boots!  I am Thor!  One boot just flew off, tearing the strap with it.  You should have seen it fly!  Ha!  Imagine my power!  The other came off but was trailing behind me because the strap did not break.  I just kept running!  I love that I can get them off, but like how good my feet feel when they…

Meet Equamore’s horses: Raffie

Raffie arrived at the Equamore sanctuary in September of 2012 after Jackson County investigated a report of two neglected horses. A deputy called Equamore to take in both horses, but at the last minute, the owners refused to surrender the other, younger horse, allowing only Raffie to be taken to the sanctuary. The other horse had to be left behind, alone in the field. Raffie was extremely thin and, despite the fall season, had not shed his thick coat from…

Radiograph of Thor's Hoof

Foot Fetish

Today we began a new project for our horses with lameness issues.  Our veterinarian took radiographs of the front feet of Bryant, who was previously diagnosed with Ringbone, Shorty, who was previously diagnosed with Navicular disease, and Magic, who has severe chronic laminitis.  We will add these to recent radiographs of Thor, who has early stage laminitis and thin soles, Sassy who has severe chronic laminitis, and older pictures of Magic.  Bryant’s diagnosis was changed, and it was determined that…

Meet Equamore’s horses: Bryant

Bryant is a beautiful Appendix Quarter Horse whose Rogue Valley neighbors noticed his neglect. After Jackson County Animal Control intervened, he was brought to the Equamore sanctuary in 2007. As you can see in this photo, he was terribly thin, and his hip bones were completely devoid of hair and full of scabs. Despite his poor condition, Bryant eagerly went into his trailer and nickered to each person who came to greet him at Equamore. “He’s such a gentle guy,”…

Equamore Sanctuary’s Christmas at the Barn

This afternoon, Equamore Sanctuary hosted a Christmas at the Barn party with stable tours, stories about the horses, and hot chocolate, cider, and other goodies, creating a wonderful opportunity for the community to learn more about Equamore. It was a beautiful, sunny (if chilly) afternoon, and all visitors arriving at the barn were first greeted by Magic, below. After saying hello to Magic, visitors walked through the barn, where Equamore board members, staff, and volunteers were on hand to introduce…

These Boots Are Made for Walkin’…. And Trotting and Galloping

December 5, 2012 I never in a million years thought I would accessorize.  I used to tease Hoover about his blankets and boots.  Now I tease Magic about his blanket.  The fly mask was supposed to be my limit. But I have boots!  My front feet have been hurting for a long time.  Today a man I have seen before came and took some odd inside pictures of my front feet.  I’m not completely sure what happened – people always…
