Do you know how much a horse or pony should weigh?
Do you know how often a horse’s teeth should be examined?
Do you know when a horse’s hooves are too long?
Do you know that horses, especially older horses, need shelter from wind, rain, and snow?
Do you know that not knowing such basic facts about horse care can lead to neglect or even abuse of horses by their owners?

These and other questions will be addressed at the first of this year’s Equamore Foundation Academy classes between 10 am and 12 noon on Saturday, February 28, in the Sanctuary barn east of Ashland on Hwy 66. The class, entitled “Equine Neglect and Abuse,” is designed for horse owners, law enforcement, and animal welfare advocates who want to know how to recognize equine neglect and abuse and what they can do about it. The fee for attendance is $25 with scholarships available to law enforcement officers whose duties include animal welfare.

The instructor for the class is Dr. William Ferguson, DVM, who has practiced veterinary medicine since 1980. Dr. Ferguson and his partners at Rogue Equine Hospital have provided excellent care and advice to Equamore for some years and are now partnering with the Academy as part of the mission they share with the Foundation to make the public aware of standards required for the care of healthy horses.
