Sadly, on this day we lost one of our most interesting horses. Shorty was always curious, and loved being around anyone who visited the Sanctuary. He had a permanent sponsor who visited him frequently, asking only that he be his own loving self. We will miss this lively little horse.

Shorty was accepted into the Foundation in January 2003, when he was about 10 years old. At that time, he had a lameness condition later diagnosed as navicular syndrome. His former owner wanted to buy a horse she could ride, but her husband would not agree to that unless she found another home for Shorty or had him euthanized.

In February of 2003 as a birthday present, Linda Barber was given guardianship of Shorty. It has turned out to be a gift that keeps on giving to both horse and human. Linda comes on a regular basis to groom Shorty and give him the loving attention he thrives on.

In March of 2009, Shorty was taken to Equamore’s rehab center at Bay Mare Farm in California for treatment of a severe case of thrush. His frogs improved, and he returned to the Sanctuary in early June, much to his guardian’s relief. His caretakers in California and his pasture mates miss his curiosity and friendly nature. Even though Shorty is lame and cannot be ridden, he enjoys his life in a field with other horses. He is the well-muscled bay with tiny feet and a slight limp who always greets visitors with a nicker and a nose when they enter the gelding field.
