For eight long and lonely years, Henry lived by himself in a pasture with his owners providing only the bare necessities. Dental and foot care, as well as his need for other horses, were simply not a part of his owners’ understanding of horse care. When volunteers were asked to bring him from Sam’s Valley to Equamore Sanctuary, because his owners were moving to an assisted living facility, they were told that he was a “handful.” In truth, the Morgan gelding was only too willing to hop into the trailer. Introduced into a large pasture with other horses, however, Henry seemed disinterested in his new surroundings, even when a filly trotted up to him to exchange breaths, a universal greeting in equine circles.

By the next morning, however, Henry’s curiosity was piqued by the arrival of the morning ration of hay, which was followed that evening by another load. As he ventured into the midst of his pasture mates, the comfort he felt in the company of other horses was visible in his eyes. Henry is now a fully integrated member of the Equamore gelding herd and is especially connected to Buckley, who is his constant companion.
