Equamore Academy

Caring for Horses Clinic

April 29, 2012

The Equamore Academy begins its Spring/Summer Benefit Series of clinics “for the love of horses” on the 29th of April. Classes begin with the Henneke Body Scoring Clinic with Gene Koo Fang, DMV. Participants who pass the class can be certified to aid law enforcement in determining the condition of large animals whose lives may have been endangered by starvation or neglect. A summary of the 2011 class is available from the “Events” Page.

Academy classes will continue with a series of three clinics in horse care beginning with “Hoof Care for Horse Owners”  on Saturday, June 2, 2012. The instructor will be Nancy Ash, who teaches for the Oregon School of Natural Hoof Care in Jacksonville, Oregon and chairs the Equamore Foundation’s Board of Directors.

Advanced tickets for the Equamore Foundation Benefit Series of Concerts and Clinics can be purchased using PayPal in the column to the right. If space allows, tickets may also be purchased at the gate on the day of the event. It is strongly advised, however, that advanced tickets be purchased for all Clinics, as space is limited

Henneke Scoring System

The Henneke Scoring System is a scientific method of evaluating a horse’s body condition regardless of breed, body type, gender, or age. It is now widely used by law enforcement agencies as an objective method of scoring a horse’s body condition in horse cruelty cases. The Henneke Scoring System is accepted in a court of law.

What is the Henneke System?

Don Henneke, PhD, developed the Henneke Body Condition Scoring System during his graduate study at Texas A & M University.  It is based on both visual appraisal and palpable fat cover of the six major points of the horse that are most responsive to changes in body fat.  The Henneke Chart is a standardized scoring system, whereas the terms, “skinny”, “thin”, “emaciated” or “fat” are all subjective terms that have different meanings to different people.
