A Rough Beginning

  • Chestnut Arab Mare
  • Entry Date – 8/15/08 at age 3
  • Type of rescue – Seizure by Jackson County Sheriff’s Department
  • Reason – Severe neglect and abuse
  • Special needs – None

At age three, Star was left starving in a field of stickers with an eighteen-year- old mare while her seventeen-year-old father and three-year-old brother, both stallions, stood in small pens without even stickers to eat. She had never had a halter on and neither had her brother, Finn, and they were both very fearful of humans. All four horses were seized by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and Equamore volunteers transported them to the Sanctuary, leaving behind her grandfather who had died of starvation.

Food was what she needed most and she gained her proper weight back quickly. It took several weeks for volunteers to gain her trust and get a halter on her so she could be lead out to the mare field for exercise.

She is currently in training and ridden by Equamore staff members. She spends her turnout time in the mare field as the “boss mare” in a sub-herd of three which includes Chance and Sandy. They don’t make a move without her and if they do move, Star is always in the lead.
