After several years of taking lessons on the roan Pony of the America, Sandy’s young riders outgrew her, moving on to full-sized horses. She was then sold to a family in Washington and in December of 2010 returned to Equamore Sanctuary for retirement. Sadly, while in Washington, Sandy developed a severe eye infection that resisted treatment. In response to eye irritation, horses often rub their faces, causing varying degrees of damage, including eye ulcers.

When Sandy’s condition worsened, her veterinarian suggested that she would be more comfortable with the eye removed. The operation was done, and Sandy became the sixth Equamore equine to adapt to total or partial blindness. The Appaloosa, Boogie, and the pony, Happy, lived for many years after they became sightless, as did Auggie, who retained the sight of one eye. Horses adapt well to most of the exigencies of life, and Sandy was no exception. She had no conception that her condition was any different from what other horses were experiencing. She continued to enjoy her stall, her food, and her time in the mare turnout field with her two best friends, Chance and Star.
