Sampson

It is unknown when Sampson was gelded the first time, but that veterinarian’s incompetence resulted in the feisty pony continuing to behave as a stallion. Unfortunately for Sampson and all of his handlers, who thought he was a gelding, Sampson had been born with a retained testicle. With one testicle remaining, Sampson’s was, indeed, a stallion whose behavior was completely misunderstood. He was dangerous to work with and very aggressive with other horses. At ten years of age, his owners decided that euthanasia was their only option unless Equamore would accept him into its Sanctuary.

A short time after Sampson arrived at the Sanctuary, still exhibiting the aggressive and unruly behavior that had been described by his owners, a blood test showed that Sampson’s testosterone level was quite high. An ultrasound confirmed Sampson’s unaltered condition. His second surgery was performed and Sampson, now truly a gelding, began his new life.

The second surgery was totally successful, but a long road lay ahead before Sampson’s habitual bad behavior began to improve. Because he was difficult to manage when he was a stallion, his treatment from humans most likely had been very harsh and unpleasant. Though Sampson’s aggression disappeared over a very short period of time, his fear of humans took years to overcome.

Fast forward to today, seventeen years older and a bit grey at the temples, this little pony/QH cross has enjoyed a peaceful life in the company of ponies, minis, and The General. He still plays pretty roughly with The General and his dog friend, Henry; but now, it’s just for fun and nothing more.
