Mowen first came to the Sanctuary from his previous owners because they were getting out of the horse business and moving back to town. Unable to find a buyer, the owners asked if Equamore might possibly find someone to adopt him. In February of 2009, seven months after his arrival at the Sanctuary, Mowen was adopted.

Unfortunately, Mowen’s new guardian moved him from the Sanctuary sooner than recommended. Equamore volunteers continued to monitor the horse as he was moved several more times without permission from the Foundation. When she was unable to treat a developing lameness, his guardian asked if the Foundation would consider taking him back. The conditions of adoption in all of our contracts state that, if the person who adopted the horse is not able to care for the horse and its needs, the horse shall be returned to the Foundation. In June of 2011, Mowen returned to the Sanctuary where he remained for the rest of his life. His lameness was due to improper hoof care and after a series of quality hoof trims by qualified personnel, Mowen fully recovered!
