Fly Masks

Fly Masks

September 16, 2012 I never thought I would wear a fly mask.  Hoover was into “accessories” – booties and different blankets.  I prefer a strong, untouched look.  But the flies have been so bad in the fields I finally decided to try a mask.  Most of the horses let the humans put one on in the morning.  If they don’t like their mask they easily remove it with their morning roll.  Magic wears one and said it was terrific, so…

The Equamore Sanctuary High Pasture

The High Pasture

September 15, 2012 I went to the high pasture today.  I thought I would not go there without Hoover.  I had waited so long for him to come with me.  I am not sure why I trotted up there today – it is hot and there is no grass there since the rains stopped.  I just galloped!  I was alone – none of the other horses had any interest in a high, dry field.  Maybe I had hoped to find…

Hoof Trim

Yesterday as soon as I came into the barn for some dinner, the boss came and led me into the inside arena. I thought I was supposed to give her another lesson. So as soon as she approached me with the grain, I snatched a bit of the treat and tore off running wildly. But then she left and I didn’t know what was happening. I called out – and Magic answered! Again and again! Just like I used to…

Horse Show

The humans at the Sanctuary hosted a “horse show”. I believe it was some kind of competition. A lot of horses that don’t live at the Sanctuary came along with their humans. All the visiting horses had obviously been seriously groomed by humans – braided tails and manes, coats unusually shiny. Even the humans were dressed up. Good grief. I prefer being groomed by another horse – just get the bugs off. The “show” was silly – horses one by…

I Bit Sara

July 30 They Call Me Thor I Bit Sara The mare across the barn from me is called Sara.  I frankly find her trying.  When she has a human visitor, she kicks the wall between her and the mare next to her, she tries to bite that little mare, and she generally behaves badly.  “That human is mine!!  Stay Away!!”  It all startles me!  Being possessive of a human.  So pathetic. When she gets groomed, she prances down the barn…

Slowly Walking On

July 21, 2012 They Call Me Thor I have not written much lately. Moving forward without Hoover has been hard. I miss him and I’m lonely. Hoover would tell me to look past myself and be strong. I am trying, Hoover. I have thought about leaving the Sanctuary and running free and wild. But Hoover brought us here for a reason and went through a lot of pain to get me here with him and set up with a great…

Hoover

July 12, 2012 My best friend Hoover passed away today.  I don’t know how to be Thor without Hoover cheering me on.  As you know by now, I am afraid of many things.  But I am most afraid of life without Hoover. I was Hoover’s guardian.  My life’s work was to protect Hoover.  What you may not know was for the last part of his life, Hoover lived to protect me.  No one would have rescued a wild and fearful…

Equamore Horses Love Treats from Sponsors!

Sponsors

They call me Thor. I have what the humans call a “sponsor”. I don’t really know what that means or how I got one. I think it must be a name for the person that scares you the least. My sponsor is a little person with a soft voice. But she can talk! From the time I first came to Equamore, she stood outside my stall and spoke to me. On and on and on, day after day after day…

Hoover in the Field

Hoover in the Field

They call me Thor. This week Hoover has been in the field for few hours each day. Sometimes he lies down because his feet hurt, but mostly he stands and grazes like a real horse. I love it when Hoover is in the field. Instead of laying down in his turnout and being hand fed by humans, he is out with us, grazing, playing, and being a horse. Truthfully, one of the causes of my anxiety has been about whether…

Training

June 20, 2012 They call me Thor. I have been training the human boss of the Equamore Foundation. What a nuisance, but she insists. She thinks she should be able to walk quietly along side me while I wear a halter attached to a lead rope. I think she walks fine by herself and should leave me alone. But with all the help she has been to Hoover, I am trying to indulge her just a bit. Last week, she…
