Although Equamore Foundation is in the rescue business, we’d rather be proactive in keeping horses out of rescues. We know first hand how hard it is for horses to be moved even temporarily from the homes and humans they have come to depend on for security. For that reason in 2008 Equamore Foundation created the Oregon Hay Bank (OHB) to give a helping hand to horse owners in temporary financial crises. The bank stockpiles two kinds of hay: the kind that grows from the ground and the kind that doesn’t grow on trees.

Equamore’s Hay Bank outreach program is proof positive that a small number of concerned, motivated people can make a difference for those who encounter temporary financial difficulties. Horses and horse owners in eighteen Oregon counties have received hay grants since the Hay Bank’s inception. We have also supplied applications, forms, protocols and procedures to no fewer than ten other groups and organizations throughout the United States who asked to follow our model to start “Hay Banks” of their own. And OHB grants have provided feed and veterinary assistance to six separate rescue organizations in the state of Oregon. In 2014 alone, twenty-two applications were received from horse owners and approved for Hay Bank assistance with feed and veterinarian care affecting fifty-six horses.
