Magic, a dapple gray quarter horse gelding, lived next door to the Equamore Sanctuary for a number of years, the only horse feasting on a well-watered pasture. Despite what “common knowledge” tells us, an unlimited diet of sweet, green grass is not the best forage for horses, who suffer serious consequences if they gain too much weight. Magic’s frequent bouts of laminitis and abscessing concerned his owner, who had no other accommodation for the horse. Since Magic already knew many of the gelding herd from years of over-the-fence conversations, he was allowed to come into the Foundation when he was retired in 2010.
