Late this evening, Shane passed away. In the six weeks he was an Equamore horse, he gained a lot of weight with special feed, had his dental problems cared for, had a cozy stall next to his best friend Wishes, found the energy to trot around the arena with his head held high and was well loved by Equamore staff and volunteers. Sadly, he developed colic and none of the vet’s treatments worked. His still-weakened condition and his advanced age made it impossible to for us to beat this affliction. This evening, we sent Shane to his final sanctuary.
Shane reminds us of how much a single lovely horse can make a difference. For the staff and volunteers, he was a sweet and dignified horse who bore witness each day to the gentle and forgiving nature of horses, even as he stoically struggled with health problems. He was important to us, and we will miss him. Shane was also important to Bryant – our lovely quarter horse who, in his contented years at Equamore, never had a friend until Shane. Most importantly Shane will be missed by his best friend and longtime companion Wishes, the beautiful blind mustang mare whm Shane led and protected for years.
Tonight we all grieve for Shane and know we will miss his lovely and sweet nature in the barn. Tomorrow, we will focus on finding new paths for Bryant, and especially for the beautiful Wishes.
