The Oregon Hay Bank Free Health Clinics:
A Success Story
The Oregon Hay Bank, a program of the Equamore Foundation, held its latest Free Health Clinic at Eden Farm in Ashland, Oregon over the weekend of April 11th. Over 25 horses were given check-ups by veterinarian Dr. William Fergusen of the Rouge Valley Equine Hospital. The animals were examined and recommended for dental work, deworming, or gelding, services which owners could obtain through a voucher system developed by Julie Fritz, program developer for Equamore and Executive Director of the Oregon Hay Bank. Vaccinations could be obtained at owners’ expense. The free health clinics are funded by a grant to Equamore from the PetSmart organization and supported by health care practitioners who offer their services to the program at reduced prices.
Owners were also able to have their horses feet trimmed by local trimmers Becca Thomason, Neal Carter, and Jason Comer. Equamore Board President Nancy Ash, also a trimmer, pitched in when needed. The last station on the clinic schedule was a session with equine body worker, Jim Shackelford. All services except vaccinations at the fair were provided free to owners as part of Equamore Foundation’s mission to support horse owners by helping them keep and care for their animals.
